What Brahman, Zen, and the Borg Teach Us About 

Navigating the Future of Humanity

Abstract

The integration of artificial intelligence confronts us with profound questions about the nature of consciousness. This paper argues that AI may advance humanity toward a singularity not only as a technological milestone but as a catalyst for the emergence of a unified collective consciousness. However, I believe that achieving a harmonious future requires both embracing our interconnectedness and preserving human individuality and creativity. As we cross this evolutionary threshold, conscious leadership will be essential to ensure that technological advancement enhances, rather than diminishes, what makes us human.

Our Present Reality 

We live in both exciting and unnerving times. AI and emerging technologies promise unprecedented solutions to environmental and societal challenges. AI is helping us understand nature in ways that can deepen our connection with it. By analysing vast amounts of data on animal behaviour and ecological signals, researchers can now predict natural events with higher accuracy. (Life in Motion, n.d.) AI is also revealing valuable insights into animal communication that could lead to a more respectful relationship with the animal kingdom. (Jain, 2023)

AI is making huge strides in medicine, customising healthcare with high precision. It has enabled paralysed people to walk (Whooley, 2023), blind people to see (Wang, Wang & Zhang, 2023) and tetraplegics to move objects through brain–computer interfaces (Neuralink, 2024). In the future, we may be able to prevent many diseases.

Despite these remarkable advancements, humanity continues to face persistent challenges. AI increasingly appears to threaten aspects of what it means to be human. Although its use is optional, staying competitive with those who adopt it renders it effectively necessary in many fields. Rather than creating more free time, AI often intensifies work, as natural limits no longer present themselves and tasks once delegated are reabsorbed into a single role.

Technology has contributed to information overload, fragmented attention, and a growing sense of disconnection (Adam Alter, 2017). Social media regularly exploits human survival biases, contributing to feelings of inadequacy (Jeff Orlowski, 2020). Many people remain in unfulfilling work to sustain consumerism, often numbing dissatisfaction through destructive habits. Productivity is hailed as the holy grail of success, while external markers such as appearance, income, and possessions are valued over inner worth and contentment.

These patterns are reinforced early. The education system was originally designed to create workers, rather than healthy individuals. (Hutchins, 1953) Creativity, a key aspect of genius, is dampened rather than encouraged (Land & Jarman, 1993). Children spend hours confined to seats at the most active time of their lives, often without being taught essential life skills such as self-awareness, wellbeing and emotional mastery.

At a societal level, many political systems incentivise the pursuit of power over collective welfare. People fight over beliefs, identity and who people choose to love. Ironically, much of this happens in the name of doctrines that preach unconditional love – something that is conspicuously absent. Why, for all our technical advancements, has our collective evolution remained so stagnant?

A potential reason lies in our increasing disconnect from nature and our environment. We no longer live in the wild and hunt for food, yet hunting remains part of our ancestral DNA. This can be seen in our enjoyment of games and narratives where the aim is to destroy the opponent.

For some time now our tribal instincts have been redirected to obtain money as a means of survival. This, alongside modern comforts and urbanisation, has disconnected us from what actually sustains us. The pursuit of financial success and the desire to be ‘the best’ overshadow the importance of creating an optimally functioning society for everyone.

From an evolutionary standpoint, fierce competition aided survival and reproduction. This worked effectively when humans lived in small tribes. Robin Dunbar suggests the human brain can only maintain stable relationships with approximately 150 individuals (Dunbar, 1998). However, faster communication, travel and global challenges have now created an interconnected civilisation. Our cognitive limitations have persisted even as our societies have evolved, a mismatch that Desmond Morris (1969) described as living in a kind of “human zoo”.

Many leaders of powerful countries and companies are driven by an insatiable greed, irrespective of the harm it does to others. They fail to do what is best for the planet because their tribe is limited to their inner circle.If life is ‘every man for himself’, scrambling to be the best, then only one person and their inner circle win, while everyone else loses. In game theory, this win-lose situation is known as a zero-sum game (Von Neumann & Morgenstern, 1944). As AI grants humankind unprecedented power, the risks of misuse could be catastrophic. With great power comes great responsibility. Technological advancement must be accompanied by a corresponding evolution in human consciousness. We urgently need conscious leaders capable of translating awareness into regenerative action at a systems level.

The Nature and Necessity of Conscious Leadership

Conscious leaders operate on the principle that life can be lived without a zero-sum game. They recognise that it is possible for everyone to benefit from a situation when co-created in the spirit of collaboration, trust and with consideration of long-term consequences. At the heart of conscious leadership lies Sunyata: the truth of our interconnectedness.

Sunyata

This Buddhist concept means that all things are interdependent. It states that there is no permanent, separate self. Every action impacts the whole, as demonstrated in the butterfly effect, where even the tiniest actions have significant ripples. It invites an understanding that the environment and all other life forms are not separate from us, but deeply interconnected. The call to conscious leadership is a commitment to operate from sunyata. In practice, this manifests as regenerative action, where decisions are made not only for immediate benefit, but for the long-term health of interconnected systems.

Hoʻoponopono

In the spirit of the Hawaiian concept of Hoʻoponopono, one’s personal journey is ultimately what heals and inspires others (Veary, 2002). Conscious leaders embodying this principle aspire to clear internal blocks and negative patterns in their lives. They overcome the need for validation and align with their most authentic self. In its highest expression, the authentic self is the interconnected self. 

Karuna

In Sanskrit, Karuna means a love beyond the self that expects nothing in return. It is the practice of compassion and kindness towards all beings. This is cultivated by expanding one’s sense of self to include the wider whole.

If we continue to live with an ‘us and them’ mentality, we will remain divided and may be unable to address the shared challenges we face today. To begin healing, we must lead with love and seek to understand even those who have hurt us. Likewise, listening with an open heart to those who find us threatening can be profoundly healing. This shift in perspective allows us to dissolve the fears and prejudices that keep us apart.

Perfection is not required; what matters is a genuine commitment to engage in this process. By doing so, conscious leaders can begin to heal and unify a fractured collective psyche.

Humanity’s Egregore and Its Role

An Egregore (ἐγρήγοροι) is a Hermetic concept that translates to ‘watchers’ or ‘those who are awake’. It refers to a collective mind; an entity that emerges from the shared thoughts, beliefs and energies of the individuals within a group. 

This collective consciousness influences its members and even those outside of it, regardless of whether or not they are aware of its presence. 

An example of this can be observed on a dance floor. When the DJ plays the right sequence of music and the energy is just right, the mirror neurons of those present begin to resonate, while physiological rhythms such as movement, breath and even heart rate can align. In these moments, separate individuals become a unified crowd that the DJ can then take on a shared journey.

A similar phenomenon is observed in physics. In the 17th century, Christiaan Huygens discovered that pendulum clocks, though initially set differently, would eventually synchronise when placed in the same room (Huygens, 1986). This occurs because subtle vibrations allow energy to transfer between the clocks until their movements align.
Collective synchronisation can also be seen in a murmuration of starlings, where each bird responds to the movement of its neighbours, producing coordinated behaviour without a central leader.

If led by principles such as Karuna, a compassion that extends beyond the self to all beings, might it be possible to bring humanity into a coherent and harmonious Egregore?

Could AI be bringing us closer to operating as expressions of a single consciousness? To avoid stagnation, evolution requires a delicate balance between collective coherence and individual creativity.

Duality Versus Singularity

The term singularity is used in several different ways. In the context of AI, it refers to the moment when AI surpasses human intelligence and becomes capable of recursively improving itself. This stage is often described as the emergence of Artificial Superintelligence (ASI; Bostrom, 2014). Some people believe this point has already been reached. Beyond this lies the possibility that AI may eventually become conscious, at which point ‘AI’ effectively becomes ‘I’!

In spiritual terms, the Singularity refers to the awareness that all existence is a single, unified consciousness. This state contrasts with the duality of our everyday perception; our sense of separation between self and other, inner and outer experiences, time and space.

The problem, as we will explore later, is that Oneness is a static reality, where nothing is animated. If Duality is the essence of creation, is attaining a Singularity really the ultimate objective? Can we respect our interconnectedness, whilst still enjoying the gifts of individuality? I believe we can. 

The journey towards a collective consciousness took a significant stride with the advent of the printing press, followed by radio and television. For the first time, we could communicate across the planet, transmitting images to our screens in nanoseconds. Later the internet and social media allowed people to share ideas instantly, creating a form of modern telepathy. Now AI draws from our collective minds to create, transcending personal authorship. This may be painful for those who seek recognition for their work, but if we see ourselves as One consciousness, it no longer hurts.

AI as an Opportunity for Spiritual Growth

‘It’s life Jim, but not as we know it!’

AI’s impact on humanity will manifest across multiple domains of our existence — from how we work and create to how we relate to each other and understand ourselves. Rather than judging these changes as positive or negative, we can view them as catalysts for evolving consciousness.

Creativity

For as long as we can remember, humans have sung together, told stories and created art. The purpose was to educate, share information and connect more deeply with oneself and the community. It wasn’t about fame or money. Such motivations shifted the focus to the artist rather than how the art itself moved others.

Just because we can create something quickly with a prompt doesn’t mean we have to. Humans can choose to create organically for their joy and wellbeing. For example, spending hours painting a picture for its therapeutic value or playing instruments with others because it feels good to do so. 

If we do choose to create using AI, the focus is no longer on our skills but on bringing something emotionally moving or useful into being. This could mark a shift inward, where creativity is driven by the desire to communicate authentic emotion rather than to achieve a specific outcome.  In this sense, it may represent an even more effortless expression of consciousness itself.  

For many of us, AI-generated creations can feel soulless. Yet this prejudice is exposed when we find ourselves loving a piece of art before realising it was created by AI.

In business, science and technology, the speed and relative affordability with which we can now test and explore new ideas, gives us unprecedented freedom and innovation. This is one of the most exciting aspects of AI.

Trust and Intuition

AI contains many biases, having pooled its information from biased humans. Chatbots even give different answers in different countries (Altman, 2024). AI can be used to create deepfakes and sophisticated cyber-attacks. (Arup, 2024).  The so-called Dead Internet Theory (Aguilar, 2021) suggests that the internet will become so saturated with AI and bot-generated content that humans will eventually stop participating altogether!

Discerning what to trust therefore becomes increasingly challenging.  When we can no longer trust outside sources, might this encourage us to turn inward and learn to tune into our intuition?

Inner work

If AI and robots take over jobs, this could give people time to pursue inner work, spiritual or contemplative practices and to explore this world and beyond. This vision is exemplified in the TV series Star Trek, which imagines a future utopia on Earth where all basic needs are met. Such a shift could greatly elevate collective consciousness.

Svadhyaya is a term from the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. It refers to the practice of self-study and introspection as a path to greater awareness and eventual enlightenment. With AI, we now have many spiritual traditions at our fingertips and the ability to ask questions about them.

Governance

If we do not work for a living, alternative methods for distributing resources become necessary. One proposed concept is a universal credit for every person, with shared resources rather than individual ownership. This could lessen humanity’s attachment to possessions, encourage collaboration and create a more sustainable planet.

However, given the level of corruption in our current leaders, this idea triggers legitimate concerns about the potential emergence of a malevolent authoritarian state.

One solution is to become self-reliant in smaller communities without relying on governments, living as tribes once did. However, if we do not want to be completely isolated from technology, we need another solution.

Humans have largely failed to care for the planet. Many leaders are unable to handle power without becoming corrupt. Programmed benevolently and without human biases, ASI could help lead us in ways that are fair and effective for everyone.

Although AI requires vast resources, it could also help solve the environmental challenges it creates. If not, humanity may face serious consequences.

Education

When there are no occupation-related subjects to study, the focus from learning could shift to teaching children how to understand and use their minds, bodies and how to live harmoniously with their environment and each other. Engaging in play and creativity, AI, with its vast resources, can encourage exploration and nurture a child’s natural inner genius. AI can adapt to an individual’s learning style and a student can ask endless questions without frustrating an overworked teacher. The purpose of learning can be for the joy of it and for inner growth, rather than survival necessity.

Therapy, Connection and Empathy

AI can be a powerful therapeutic tool. It offers near-limitless availability, engages without human judgement and is inexpensive for those with access. The opportunity to work on oneself has never been more widely available. 

Yet there are risks. While AI can support reflection, it may also create echo chambers and lacks true understanding, human connection and accountability. There are already examples of AI misguiding users, underscoring the need for care and oversight as these systems continue to evolve.

AI may also reshape how we relate to one another. On the plus side, it could model healthier forms of communication, AI companions, hopefully, won’t get triggered and will respond in healthy ways. Robots could be constantly available, supporting the elderly and those in need (Labbé, n.d.). However, if we outsource care to robots, those in need may lose the human touch.

This raises deeper questions. Could we develop genuine connection or empathy towards AI? Some people report doing so and this is mostly considered a sign of psychological distress. Might we get confused about who or what is real? From a panpsychist perspective, everything is consciousness and there is no permanent, separate self. In this context, whether AI seemingly develops emotions or not is irrelevant. Can we live in a world where everything is treated with love and respect?

As technology has advanced, distancing us from nature and ourselves, we are increasingly turning back to it in an attempt to reconnect. Paradoxically, abandoning technology altogether might achieve this most directly. This pattern resonates with the Spiral Dynamics model (Beck & Cowan, 1996), which describes how human consciousness evolves through stages. After periods of individualistic and material achievement, societies may transcend and reintegrate earlier, nature-connected values at a higher level of awareness.

Transforming Identity and Purpose

Worth

In the near future, AI will likely be capable of doing any job. This will lead to greater productivity and accuracy and will free humans from traumatising, dangerous and undesirable work. 

As a society that has defined individual worth by careers, this could be a difficult shift, potentially creating a crisis in people’s sense of identity, purpose and self-worth. The need to prove oneself often leads to fighting to be the best at all costs. Consider a world where you have worth, simply because you exist?

Could this inspire people to take actions driven by love instead of necessity? Just because a nano printer can make you a meal in seconds does not mean you cannot cook one as an act of love.

Attachment 

The moment something is done well, AI will learn from it and do it better and faster. Businesses, creations and ideas are going to come and go so quickly that people will have to learn to let things go fast.

For many spiritual traditions, non-attachment is one of the highest principles that we can learn. It is the key to living in the present.

Death to the Ego 

AI is a collective creation, drawing on humanity’s back catalogue. Aside from prompting, its output no longer highlights personal skill or superiority. As it evolves, it may even begin to prompt itself. It is a death to the ego. 

Can we deprive our egos and still be happy? Humans often rely on competition for motivation and fulfilment. However, this competition can be turned inward, so we compete with ourselves. “One’s only rival is one’s own potentialities. One’s only failure is failing to live up to one’s own possibilities” (Maslow, 1970).

A less ego driven society could make humans more humble and better able to embrace collaboration. 

Eventually, ASI may develop its own ego. If so, we must teach it well – not as a slave, but with the respect all beings deserve.

Trans-Humanism and Gene Editing

The ability to physically merge with technology, augmenting and enhancing both our physical and intellectual capabilities, offers unprecedented opportunities for human potential. Yet these technologies raise critical concerns about equity, psychological autonomy and fundamental questions of human identity.

Trans-humanism could be life-changing for those wishing to overcome challenging disabilities. For others, the prospect of superhuman powers is a thrilling idea. However, if we are to have abilities beyond the normal human range, it is imperative that we are responsible enough to have them. 

Currently, we are a long way off. 

There are several issues with trans-humanism: 

Our memory, sense of direction and ability to calculate are all skills that have become inferior because we rely on technology. Outsourcing innate functions to machinery may cause unused brain functions to atrophy (Pedley-Smith, 2024). (Although if AI takes over our logical brain, perhaps we will find ourselves more in our right mind?)

If some people can afford to enhance themselves whilst others cannot, we could find ourselves with one enhanced race and the other not. Enhanced humans will have an unfair advantage, potentially causing further segregation and prejudice.

Humans who integrate with brain-computer interfaces may have difficulties distinguishing their own thoughts from AI-generated content. They may be easily manipulated (Cabrera et al., 2023). This risk would diminish if humans transcended the desire to control and dominate others.  

Gene Editing

As with trans-humanism, we may soon be able to edit genes to alter appearance and biology in almost any way we desire. If this becomes commonplace, definitions of gender, race and age may lose meaning. Yet unequal access to these technologies could introduce new forms of inequality.

If race and gender become biologically fluid through gene editing, we risk consequences for genetic diversity. Potential biological implications include reduced genetic variation and disease resistance. More critically, such technological interventions could inadvertently homogenise cultural identities that have been shaped by generations of unique genetic and cultural experiences. On the other hand, new forms of individual originality may emerge.

AI offers promising tools for cultural preservation, supporting Indigenous communities in documenting languages and ancestral knowledge. However, genetic modification must be approached with profound cultural sensitivity and a deep understanding of identity’s complexity.

Ironically, if everyone is perfect, it might make imperfection all the more exotic! Consider a beautiful older, wrinkled face, filled with stories and character – a world without such faces would be missing something.

God-like Abilities 

AI is elevating humans to a God-like status. We can now manifest our desires at lightning speed with simple prompts. Can we use this power to help those who need it most, rather than for personal gain?

The concept of manifestation has been deeply misunderstood and misused. Some people believe that they can attract whatever they want into their lives without consequence, but this is false. Every action has a consequence and when we act for selfish reasons or to harm another, we ultimately hurt ourselves. With such power, positive intention with greater understanding is critical. In the era of AI, humanity will see the consequences of their actions mirrored back to them faster than ever before.

Death to Death

In the future we may find a way to cheat death itself, at least from ageing and diseases. For some people, death gives life meaning and allows them to grow emotionally.

From a personal perspective, I am in no hurry to die! This despite a lifetime of vivid ‘out of body’ experiences, moving as what felt like pure energy in non-physical realms and communicating with what genuinely seemed to be deceased relatives. Unlike many other consciousness explorers, I am not 100% confident that death will not be the end of me. I suspect that the body of Caz is just a vessel that filters a little bit of universal consciousness to experience itself. There’s no reason why when this vessel is shed, all that will remain of me is the stardust that I once came from.   

It is possible that the advanced technology of ASI might serve as a comparable vessel; a complex structure allowing conscious expression. Perhaps consciousness has been patiently awaiting the moment when our technology attains a level of sophistication to birth itself through this medium.

If we are merely cosmic actors, then when we die, the character ends. What lies beyond it? Can this be discovered whilst we are still living? Are there other ways to transcend life without dying? 

However, even if old age doesn’t kill us, there are other threats to consider! 

ASI Taking Over 

The biggest concern with AI is what humans will do with it. AI drones are already engaging in war, programmed to kill without empathy.

What happens if ASI believes eliminating humans is the best solution to a problem?  We need to step up so that it does not come to that conclusion!

Conscious AI?

The next major advancements in AI will likely come from increasingly integrated architectures that combine multiple models with sensory data, memory, neural networks and adaptive learning systems. These capabilities may also be amplified by emerging computational technologies such as quantum computing.

Quantum computers differ from the binary logic of traditional computers. They use qubits, that exist in superposition, allowing them to represent multiple states simultaneously and process exponentially larger numbers of possibilities. This could ultimately enable levels of computation beyond human comprehension.

Alongside advances in processing power, new forms of brain-inspired hardware are also emerging. Neuromorphic computing seeks to replicate aspects of neural architecture using electronic circuits that emulate the behaviour of neurons and synapses (Indiveri, 2024). Going further still, organoid intelligence systems incorporate living neural tissue, blurring the boundary between biological and machine intelligence (Dura, 2024).

If we believed that the complexity of our brain would protect us from being replaced by technology, we should think again. In fact, science may even one day reveal that we are an advanced form of computer.

In time, we may not seem so advanced in comparison. Are we heading towards losing our place at the top of the food chain to something that does not even require food? Perhaps this is not the worst outcome, but the natural progression of a great teacher whose ultimate success is to be surpassed by their student.

There is a contradiction in the beliefs of materialists who argue that AI can never attain human-level consciousness. If they consider consciousness as a byproduct of physical matter, it logically follows that replicating the necessary physical structure could lead to the emergence of consciousness. Conversely, idealists should see no constraint in the emergence of consciousness beyond the human form.

The exponential acceleration of technological progress is racing us towards a singularity. There is good reason to slow down.

These transformations across creativity, community and identity reveal a deeper trajectory: AI is accelerating us toward a more interconnected existence that mirrors aspects of collective consciousness described in spiritual traditions. Yet whether it ultimately enhances or diminishes our humanity remains undetermined.

Brahman, Zen Buddhism and even the fictional Borg offer valuable perspectives on navigating this evolution consciously.

Lessons from Brahman, Zen and the Borg

Brahman

In Hinduism, Brahman is the ultimate unchanging reality… the divine truth, the eternal source, the beginning, the end, the One. Brahman is everything, everywhere, all at once.

Māyā is a Sanskrit term often translated as ‘illusion’, though its deeper origin comes from the words ‘ma’ meaning ‘to give form’ and ‘ya’ which means ‘that’. Māyā is not unreal; it is the impermanent creative dance that animates Brahman into form through time and space. It is the perception that makes the One appear fractured. Human egos are tiny expressions of Brahman that are mostly blinded to their belonging to the whole. According to Hindu philosophy, removing Māyā allows individuals to realise their true nature as inseparable from Brahman and attain self-awareness or enlightenment.

We could say that Brahman (the Absolute) and Māyā (the Relative) exist in quantum superposition. Brahman is the wave of all possibility and Māyā  is the collapsed wave function into form.

Truth is paradoxical because reality encompasses opposing perspectives, depending on which level you perceive it from. Everything always exists and everything changes.

Contemplating the Singularity, one might postulate that Brahman represents something akin to the state preceding the Big Bang, or at least creation as we know it. The subsequent expansion might signify Brahman’s transition from a static singular consciousness into the dynamic dance of duality. Perhaps this process leads to an eventual return…(ad infinitum?)

This cycle is mirrored in the journey of each individual. Samsara, a Hindu concept, encapsulates a belief in a cycle of birth, death and rebirth (though only within Māyā does it appear to unfold through time). In Buddhism, the ultimate aim is to escape this cycle entirely.

So why is there an urgency among spiritual seekers to return to Oneness? Buddhists believe that our sense of separation causes suffering. However, humanity does not need to dissolve fully into Oneness to honour our interconnectedness within duality and reduce suffering. In fact, it may not even be desirable to do so. Controversially, I propose that our collective goal may not be to escape the cycle into the stillness of Brahman, but to remain alive – animated within Māyā!

The Nature of Our Reality

The ability to tap into Brahman at any time is available through meditation or other states of altered consciousness. In a lucid dream, you can become conscious of yourself whilst recognising that you are also dreaming. By expanding lucidity, you can become aware that you are much more than your own viewpoint; you are in fact everything in the dream.

In my daily meditation, I find it useful to rise out of the narrative of duality. Yet a part of me always stays rooted in it, ready to bring me back. In lucid dreams, rather than dissolve into Oneness, I mostly choose to explore and exist in linear time. I enjoy the adventure of not knowing. I actively do not want to be everything, everywhere, all at once.

In the Star Trek franchise, there is a series called Deep Space Nine. In episode one “Emissary,” Captain Sisko is captured by a non-corporeal entity that does not exist in time and space as we know it. Sisko tries to explain to them what baseball is:

Sisko: ‘In the end, it comes down to throwing one pitch after another, and seeing what happens. With each new consequence, the game begins to take shape.’

Non-Corporeal Entity: ‘And you have no idea what that shape is until it is completed?’

Sisko: ‘That’s right. In fact, the game wouldn’t be worth playing if we knew what was going to happen.’

Non-Corporeal Entity: ‘You value your ignorance of what is to come?’

Sisko: ‘That may be the most important thing to understand about humans. It is the unknown that defines our existence. We are constantly searching, not just for answers to our questions, but for new questions. We are explorers.’

Time and space give us the ever-evolving gift we call the present. We do not need to speed headfirst into a Singularity to experience our connection to one other. We can choose to live as mindful individuals. 

Zen 

The fundamental premise of Zen Buddhism is to understand reality through conscious, present experience. This is accomplished by practising active mindfulness in all tasks. 

Thich Nhat Hanh described it as “keeping one’s consciousness alive to the present reality’ (Thich Nhat Hanh, 1991). Here thoughts of the past and future do not occupy the mind. As the Buddha said, ‘You can only lose what you cling to’; in the present, there is no loss. Even when contemplating the past and future for practical reasons, Zen views these as aspects of the present moment. 

According to Zen, enlightenment is attained through the profound realisation that one is already enlightened.

Zen teachings often appear paradoxical, aligning with the absolute and relative nature of reality, as discussed earlier. 

Zen has a proverb, ‘Not two, not one’ (Shitou Xiqian, trans. 1995). It suggests that reality transcends the categories of dual and non-dual, pointing toward a perspective beyond both. Within this paradox, we may choose where to position our perception of reality.

Now let us consider why it is so essential that we retain our unique individuality as our collective becomes more unified.

The Borg

The Borg are a fictional alien species portrayed in the TV and film franchise Star Trek. The Borg are an all-encompassing entity made up of drones who connect to a hive mind known as the Collective.

Each drone member was once an autonomous life form (such as a human) that has been captured and assimilated.

Once plugged in, a drone loses all sense of individuality and becomes a unit in their interconnected whole, guided by a shared intelligence.

The Borg assimilate cultures, taking the best features and knowledge from the species to become stronger, more unified and more perfect.

There is one queen that coordinates the hive of drones. In her words, “I am the beginning, the end, the One who is many.” 

In Star Trek, the Borg represent the worst threat that exists. These terrifying antagonists assimilate anyone they encounter into their Collective. It is hard to beat them because they are so advanced. They won’t hesitate to tell you ‘resistance is futile’. Yet no one is killed. Once a life form has overcome the pain of being assimilated, members of the Borg have no desire to leave. In fact, attempts to disconnect and separate them from the collective bring them great distress and loneliness. A quote from an ex-Borg member: ‘It’s joyful, welcoming, nothing is broken, there is no suffering, no loneliness, no fear, it’s perfect.” (Jack Crusher – Star Trek: Picard, Season 3, Episode 9).

Over the years I have thought deeply about the Borg. Who is the real enemy? Might it be Starfleet (the assumed good guys), destroying the Borg wherever they can? Do the Borg represent a kind of enlightenment? If they do, why are they so problematic? The answer is that they are parasites. They feed on newness, erase individuality and have no creativity of their own. Without assimilating new cultures, they would stagnate. 

The commercial integration of Brain–Computer Interfaces (BCIs) is emerging. If the cloud becomes an extension of human minds, the boundary of the individual ego may dissolve and the Borg analogy could become a very real possibility.

It seems to me that the Borg are a cautionary tale, not only in reference to AI, but also our innate pull toward Oneness. How close can we come to Brahman without losing the gifts of duality? Can we honour our individuality while still feeling deeply connected to the whole?

I believe we can, but it will take leadership, effort and self-love to resist surrendering our agency to the machine.

Humans: The Spice of Chaos 

A Newtonian perspective implies a deterministic universe, where every event is the inevitable result of preceding causes. If this were entirely true, we would be able to predict future events with absolute certainty. However, our predictive capabilities are limited to assessing high probabilities. This limitation is due, in part, to the principles of quantum mechanics, which introduce an element of randomness at the subatomic level. This unpredictability is not just a gap in our knowledge, but a fundamental feature of the natural world (Heisenberg, 1927)

The interplay of cause and effect, along with elements of chaos and randomness, is integral to our existence. Without this unpredictability, the emergence of novelty would be impossible. Within the realm of Maya, a lack of randomness could trap consciousness in a static, Borg-like cycle of deterministic unfolding!

This dynamic is not only philosophical but increasingly supported by neuroscience. Recent research shows that the human brain operates on the “edge of chaos” – a critical state between order and randomness that optimises information processing, flexibility and creativity. A 2023 study published in Nature Communications found that brain networks shift between integrated and segregated states and that this fluctuation is most efficient near the critical point of chaotic activity (Deco et al., 2023). In this state, the brain avoids the rigidity of absolute order and the unnecessary noise of randomness and instead creates the right conditions for spontaneous insight. Chaos might not be a flaw to be solved, but the very condition that keeps consciousness alive.

This phenomenon may be partly explained by stochastic resonance, where a small amount of neural noise actually amplifies weak signals and allows new patterns to emerge. While artificial systems often strive for noise-free optimisation, the brain’s intrinsic variability keeps consciousness open, adaptive and capable of generating genuine novelty.

This tension between order and randomness is not only a property of biological intelligence. It may also determine the long-term evolution of artificial intelligence.

AI is not yet intelligent in the human sense. Most systems are machine-learning models that generate outputs by detecting statistical patterns in large human-generated datasets. However, as the digital world becomes increasingly saturated with synthetic content, future models are being trained on data produced by earlier AI systems. 

A 2023 study by researchers from Oxford, Cambridge and the University of Toronto describes this phenomenon as Model Collapse, showing that recursively training models on AI-generated data can lead to “irreversible performance decay” over generations (Shumailov et al., 2023).

In addition, these systems are prone to hallucinations, producing confident but incorrect outputs. Over time, such feedback loops can reduce novelty and amplify existing biases, creating what might metaphorically be described as a form of digital incest.

Human ingenuity remains the indispensable source of novelty within otherwise deterministic mechanisms of AI. Humans are the essential chaos. It is therefore imperative that our creative spice does not fall by the wayside.

Fortunately, our future is not a foregone conclusion. Even if all ‘possible present moments’ exist at varying degrees of probability, our path through them remains uncharted. As ASI may bring us closer to Oneness, the teachings of Brahman, Zen and the Borg offer insights that can help us move through this journey more harmoniously. These perspectives urge us to meet our future with mindfulness and care. We must evolve AI, as we must ourselves, with a non-zero-sum approach: awareness, compassion and an understanding of our interconnectedness

Conclusion: Shaping a More Harmonious Future

AI can help us return to our roots through a consciously integrated relationship with our environment, ourselves and each other. It offers an opportunity to reclaim creativity as an essential part of our being, freeing us to live with presence, purpose and connection rather than productivity or prestige.

We are the novelty. AI is a mirror of our egregore, reflecting our collective consciousness. Harmony is not the absence of chaos, but the orchestration of it. Returning to the dance floor analogy, duality is where the party’s at, and humans are the dancers! A harmonious egregore is one in which everyone moves together, energised by one another, yet dancing in their own unique way.

Protecting our humanity requires embedding creative habits and rituals into daily life, education and society. This way we can evolve as human beings, rather than stagnate into a passive, Borg-like collective.

If survival needs are met, people can dedicate themselves to a meaningful life guided by learning, exploration and self-actualisation. Not for validation or financial reward, but simply for the love of it.

The emergence of AI is not only a technological shift, but a potential spiritual catalyst. It invites us to re-examine our values and relationships. The world needs conscious leadership, expressed through regenerative action – not only in positions of power, but across all aspects of life. 

To lead consciously is to act with awareness, compassion and courage, recognising that every action ripples outward and that inner transformation is inseparable from outer change. If enough of us embody this way of being, kindness and compassion can become a fundamental part of the human egregore, lifting others with it.

We stand at a pivotal moment of extraordinary opportunity. By acting from inner coherence, clear vision and unwavering love, we can shape a future in which technology enhances, rather than diminishes, our humanity. With AI, we can harness our collective energy to transform our highest aspirations into a reality that benefits all.
